How to Apply
MPS Admission Requirements
MPS is a dual major program. Students must apply and be accepted into both a primary department or program (MSU Application Form) and the MPS program (short MPS Application Form). You need to be officially admitted into MPS to join the program.
Primary Department Application
To apply, you must first submit a Michigan State University application form. On this form, there is a place to indicate the primary department but no place to indicate a particular interest in the MPS program. After completing the general MSU application, fill out the “MPS Program Application” (see below).
Students should choose a primary degree department or program depending on their principal interest related to molecular plant sciences. Admission to the MPS program will not be affected by an applicant’s choice of primary department or program.
The participating degree-granting departments and programs are as follows:
Students who select BMB, CMB, GGS or MGI as a primary department or program will automatically be transferred to the Biomolecular Sciences (BMS) Gateway. No special action is required by applicants, nor will this affect the admissions decision process.
Deadlines
The regular MPS application submission deadline is the same as the deadline for MSU graduate school application. However, we continue to accept applications before the final MSU graduate school offer is made to the student. MPS works with the various primary degree departments and programs to make decisions on assistantships to this pool of incoming students.
We also accept students after they are admitted to, or have arrived at, MSU. In this case, the student needs to send a separate message to the MPS Director and have their MSU graduate school application packet forwarded to MPS, in addition to submitting the online MPS application form.
In general, we consider applications from continuing students before the end of their first year of graduate school at MSU. Exceptions may be made upon discussion of the Executive Committee.
MPS Program Application
You should fill out a short application form directly to the MPS program. Note that you must first submit a Michigan State University application to be considered for admission to your primary department or program. MPS only considers your application after your primary degree department or program is interested in accepting you.
